About the retreat

Join us for a 6-day Buddhist meditation retreat in the hills of Andalucía, in a valley looking out to the Mediterranean sea

Join us for this relaxing and invigorating Buddhist meditation retreat at Santillan, a beautiful Andalucian retreat centre set at the top of a countryside valley, five kilometres from the sea and 35 minutes from Málaga airport.

We meet in the mornings and evenings for meditation, teaching and yoga, while free afternoons invite you to enjoy your retreat how you wish.

Mornings include Buddhist teachings and workshops, with each session having one or two guided meditations. The teachings will explore the practice and theory of Buddhist meditation in a down-to-earth, easy-to-follow way.

Teachings will also cover the inner causes of stress and anxiety, offering practical tips, techniques, and ways of thinking to help you de-stress and find greater calm and wellbeing in your everyday life.

For relaxation time, you can enjoy the gardens, tennis court, salt-water pool area, and the many spaces to enjoy a nap, nature, the sun, company, or a good book, and wonderful star-gazing at night due to the reduced light in this location. This is also time for local excursions and trips.

You don’t need any experience to join this retreat. We hope that by getting away, enjoying the serenity of this location, and exploring these teachings, this week will offer you the space to gain practical understanding and experience of these transformative practices, for your own wellbeing and for the benefit of those around you.

We’re sure you will leave feeling refreshed, nourished, and stress-free, equipped with new tools to manage stress and anxiety for a more positive and peaceful mindset.

About The Venue

An Andalucian cortijo with gardens overlooking the valley and the sea

Santillan Yoga and Wellness Retreat is an expansive Andalucian cortijo with gardens overlooking its own valley and on to the Mediterranean sea. There are multiple yoga and meditation salas, including a Garden Sala with views all around to the gardens, the valley and hills, and on to the sea.

Santillán sits at the top of a countryside valley five kilometres from the Mediterranean, and is conveniently only 35 minutes from Málaga airport. Thanks to the micro-climate and the owners’ love of flora, the gardens have matured into a tropical Mediterranean paradise, bursting with rare and colourful plants, shrubs, trees and flowers. Mediterranean, vegan and grown on site

Santillan’s Mediterranean vegan menus are created with organic produce sourced from local farmers and from the venue’s own organic vegetable gardens, fruit trees and herb garden. The cooks enjoy sharing their popular Spanish-influenced healthy Mediterranean cuisine.

The avocado, orange, lemon, mango, apple, mandarin and tropical fruit trees offer their gifts for much of the year.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffet style and included. Still water, caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee and teas are available 24 hours and free of charge. Soft drinks run on an Honesty Bar. The venue can cater for genuine food allergies and intolerances.

In the spirit of the Buddhist principle of non-harm, all food served on retreat is plant-based and vegan.

The Grounds

The Grounds

Peaceful tropical gardens and the hills all around

Immerse yourself in nature within Santillan’s peaceful tropical gardens and surrounding hills. It is the perfect setting for some time away from the hustle, bustle and noise of modern life. Many guests say Santillan offers the experience of being ‘home from home’.

There is a salt-water pool and a paddle tennis court, both free for guests to use. Around the gardens and surrounding land you can find many peaceful places to simply sit and enjoy the peace and splendour of the molino, the countryside and the sea. At night, the reduced light in this location makes for wonderful star-gazing.

Great experience ! Highly recommended. I had an amazing 7 Day Silent Vipashyana Meditation Retreat in Wales this August with David teaching and guiding us through meditations and with Manu showing us yoga practices in the mornings to start the day. David gave us very structured and clear teachings over the course of the 7 day retreat, diving deeper each day. Both David and Manu have a very warm and compassionate character and style of teaching; thanks for both of you !

Samadhi Retreat-Bliss This was my first retreat and one of the best experiences of my life! I have never felt so welcomed and comfortable anywhere else in my life previously. It was everything I could hope for, and so much more. I truly believe I met the community that I belong too… the meditations, the teaching, the yoga… were all so perfect and totally accessible to anyone at any level, if you had little or no experience of any of this previously, or if you had lots of experience, the retreat is done so well it’s inclusive of everyone. I highly, highly recommend, you will love it. I can’t wait to attend more with this community and will definitely be back next year for the retreat. 🙏

I arrived at the retreat grumpy, tired, and absolutely adamant I didn't need it. Within 24 hours, it was like my whole body had exhaled, and I recognised how burned out and exhausted I had been. I left the retreat replenished, filled with joy and buoyancy. Everyone I met spoke so positively about David and Manu, and after I spent a bit of time about them... I did too! What lovely humans, and what a way they have of creating a non-judgemental, soothing space. A few days after the retreat, it has had a really positive impact on my home life. I feel calmer, happier, and more focused. I couldn't recommend them more. They should be on NHS prescriptions.

I've been attending some of Samadhi's online study classes for the past couple of years and recently attended my first Samadhi retreat at the beautiful Trigonos retreat centre in Snowdonia. I was feeling quite anxious about attending but Hana was so helpful and reassuring when I sent in a couple of queries prior to the retreat. The retreat was very well organised and well structured, with a good balance of group meditation sessions, yoga, teachings from David and free time to explore the amazing grounds, including a beautiful peaceful lake. I have been meditating for quite a number of years, but not always as consistently as I would like. I really feel like this retreat has 'kick-started' me back into a regular meditation practice. David is really good at explaining Buddhist concepts in a way that makes them relevant to every day life and is a very calming presence. Manu's yoga sessions were perfect - energising you in the morning and then relaxing you before bed in the evening. I really enjoyed them. Finally, the food was absolutely delicious I am slowly trying to move over to a plant based diet and the variety of the vegan meals served to us gave me lots of ideas of things to try out at home. I definitely hope to return to another Samadhi retreat next year and would highly recommend!

I had a truly mind blowing experience at the Samadhi Silent Retreat at Trigonos in North Wales! Everything about the retreat was exceptional. The itinerary had been so thoughtfully designed, with regular breaks between meditation sessions, allowing plenty of time to rest, reflect and integrate the practice. There was also generous free time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, making it easy to continue the meditation in a quiet, contemplative way while walking through nature. The two gentle yoga sessions each day were the perfect complement to the meditation. The vegan meals were absolutely incredible, delicious, nourishing, and so clearly prepared with love and care. A special thank you to David. I can’t thank you enough for your wisdom, kindness, patience, and the beautiful, safe space you created for all of us to explore more deeply within ourselves. Your teaching has had a profound impact on me, and I leave feeling more peaceful, present, and inspired than I could have imagined. This retreat exceeded every expectation I had, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to deepen their meditation practice or simply reconnect with themselves. It was a truly life changing experience.

Getting There

Getting to the Retreat Centre

Santillan is about 36 km east of Málaga, up a valley above Macharaviaya. Flights and transfers are not included in the retreat price.

Routes to Santillan
By airplane

Santillan is about 36 km east of Málaga, which has an international airport. The drive from the airport takes around 35 minutes.

You can make your own way there, or we can help with taxis and taxi shares - please share your travel plans with us as early as possible so we can match you with others arriving at a similar time.

Driving from the airport

The drive from Málaga airport is straightforward. Leave the airport in the direction of Málaga. Follow signs that say ‘Almeria’ and ‘Motril’ on what will become the A7 motorway heading east toward Almeria and Motril. Do not go towards Granada, Cadiz or Seville.

Stay on the A711 and after about 20 minutes take EXIT 967 off the motorway, in the direction of Macharaviaya (Torre de Benalgabon). Please note that the motorway exit signs are not in strict numerical order.

Then turn left and follow the road underneath the motorway and up the hill towards Macharaviaya, following the signs painted on the rock.

By road

If you are making your own way by car, get off the motorway at EXIT 967 in the direction of Macharaviaya and follow the road up the hill towards Macharaviaya. Here you will start to see ‘SANTILLAN’ signs painted on the rock in green and red letters against a white background. Be sure to take the right fork next to the school at the beginning of the mountain road, as signposted.

The painted signs will guide you along a serpentine road up the hill for 3 kilometres, with spectacular views north over the mountains and the nearby white villages, and southward to the Mediterranean. Just after 3 km on this mountain road you will see a big black-and-white sign with red letters at a sharp right-hand turn. Take this turn to the right and follow this second, narrower mountain road for about 1.2 km - Molino de Santillan is at the end of a right-hand turn off this road.

Arrival & check-in

Arrivals are from 3.30pm on the first day. At check-in the venue will register your name and passport number, take a swipe of your credit card and give you two room entry cards. No charges are added to your card without your signed approval, except in the case of unreported damages discovered after departure.

Before the event, you will be asked to fill out a form related to your yoga ability and health and safety. The classes will be adapted to the group depending on the overall level.

What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in
The usual check-in time is 3.30pm. At check-in the venue will register your name and passport number, take a swipe of your credit card and give you two room entry swipe cards. No charges will be added to your credit card without your signed approval, except in the case of unreported damages discovered after your departure.

Check-out
On your departure day, please check out of your room by 10.30am at the latest. Departure days are very busy and the venue appreciates your support in helping housekeeping staff to complete their duties. Please make sure you have emptied your safety box, and settle all Honesty Bar, extras and treatment payments before departure.
Are rooms single occupancy, and are they en-suite?
All rooms are single occupancy unless you would like to share with someone attending with you. If so, please note this in the ‘Any other comments’ box on your booking form and a twin or double can be allocated to you. Fees are per person, not per room. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with a bath tub and/or shower.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
In the spirit of the Buddhist principle of non-harm, all food served on this retreat is plant-based and vegan. We ask that you do not bring non-vegetarian foods with you, or at least that you do not consume them in the public areas.

It is essential that you inform us of any dietary requirements, within reason, well in advance so that we can let the venue know of your needs.

If, for medical reasons, you follow a highly restricted diet, the venue advises you to bring with you any essentials you might need for your wellbeing.

If you are prone to a severe reaction to an allergen - for example, a very small amount on a kitchen knife or board - it is essential that the venue be informed via us. Please note that they are unable to offer absolute guarantees for such allergic conditions.
What should I bring?
Yoga mat - mats are provided, but you may want to bring your own. If you are used to using a yoga mat towel, please bring your own too, as these are not provided. If you use one of the studio mats, you will be asked to wipe it clean at the end of each class.

Meditation cushion - if you have a preferred cushion.

Beach towel and sport towel - shower towels and pool towels are provided, but please bring your own beach and sport towels.

Swimming costume - there is a salt-water pool large enough for comfortable laps and leisure swimming. Please shower before and after entering the pool.

Sun hat and sun protection cream - please be mindful about swimming in the pool with sun cream on, and follow the showering instructions before and after entering.

A good book - there is a growing multi-language library at Santillan. Feel free to leave your books behind when you have finished them so future guests can enjoy them, and please return borrowed library books to their sections when you leave.

Walking shoes - walking shoes or strong sandals are recommended if you want to take advantage of the walks around Molino de Santillan.

Insect repellent - natural repellents are preferred. If you use deet products, please be mindful of when and where you spray them.

Water bottle - you can fill this from the water fountains.
Is there Wi-Fi, and can I use my phone?
There is complimentary Wi-Fi in all common areas and some rooms, and good mobile coverage with the national Spanish operator Movistar.

The venue asks that you do not use your mobile phone in common areas, especially by the pool, in the dining rooms or on the terraces at the front of the retreat centre. There are dedicated areas with seating for the best signal strength and privacy.
What is there to do in the free afternoons?
There is a salt-water pool (12.5 x 5 x 1.5 m) with a pool patio and sun beds, and one paddle tennis court which is free for guests to use.

Although you can see the Mediterranean from Santillán, by road it is about 7 km to the sea and local beaches, and a taxi or minibus can be arranged to take you to a beach.

There are two walks accessible from Santillán. Route 1 is around the hotel, about 30–40 minutes: walk down the mountain to the water basin and climb round the other side of the hotel. Route 2 goes through the mountains with beautiful sea views and can be as long as you want.

There is a golf course about five minutes’ drive from Santillan, and in the summer months a local go-kart track about 20 minutes’ drive towards the beaches is a fun activity for motor sport enthusiasts.

In your free time you can also visit some of the very nice towns nearby: Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja, Frigiliana, or Málaga’s historic centre - the Roman theatre, La Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, Muelle Uno or the Botanical Garden.
Are massages available?
A range of massages will be on offer daily from the venue: relaxing, Ayurveda, deep tissue, cranial sacral, trigger point and myofascial release. Sessions are booked on arrival and payable in euros directly to the therapist. Massages are not included in the retreat price.
Will I need cash?
Besides having cash for your airport transfer, the extras you may need to pay for include any excursions, massage sessions and bar bills.

There is a self-service ‘Honesty Book’ system for buying soft drinks: you log your purchase in the book and settle your bill at the end of your stay. The venue accepts payments in euro cash and all major credit cards, but cannot accept bank transfers for payment of extras.
What is the policy on alcohol, drugs and smoking?
Alcohol and drugs are not permitted on the retreat.

On smoking, the venue asks: ‘In respect to non-smoking guests we do ask you to only smoke in the designated areas away from the buildings and common garden areas, thank you. Please leave butts in the receptacles provided. No smoking in your bedroom or anywhere indoors at any time.’

It is especially important to be mindful of dry natural vegetation during the spring to autumn months throughout Andalucía, as bush fires flare up easily.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. It is a condition of booking that you take out full travel insurance to cover cancellation, travel costs and other eventualities. Flights and transfers are not included in the retreat price.
How do I get there?
Santillan is about 36 km east of Málaga, around 35 minutes from Málaga international airport. You can make your own way there, or we can help with taxis and taxi shares if you share your travel plans with us as early as possible. Full driving directions are in the Getting There section above.
I have some mental health difficulties - is this retreat right for me?
We take the mental health and wellbeing of all our participants seriously. While meditation, yoga and Buddhist psychology have been proven to be beneficial for mental health and wellbeing, our events are not presented as a treatment for serious mental health problems or addiction. Meditation is not harmful in that it does not create any mental issues or emotional challenges, but as we relax into stillness and venture towards mental balance, we may bring awareness to afflictions we were not aware of before. In this way, exploring the realm of the mind and emotions can be in itself an emotional experience. We always strive to create a safe, supportive environment for participants to embark on this exploration. Our events may be less suitable for individuals who are currently (or recently) under treatment for a serious psychological condition. If any of these circumstances apply to you, and you have concerns or feel we should be aware of something, please contact us to discuss your situation and the support available.
What happens if I arrive late?
Please advise us in advance if you expect to be delayed. This will allow us to make arrangements for you.

Cancellation

By booking you agree to our cancellation policy and the booking terms and conditions.

Please note that our cancellation and refund policy for overnight retreats abroad differs from that for retreats hosted in the UK.

For retreats abroad:

A non-refundable £250 deposit is required to secure your spot. The remaining balance is due two months before the retreat.

For cancellations up to and including November 30, 2026, we will refund any remaining balance paid, minus the £250 deposit.

It is a requirement that guests purchase appropriate travel insurance to cover their activities, their place on the retreat, travel, and any other unforeseen circumstances.

While we are deeply sympathetic to those who may have to cancel at short notice, unfortunately, we are still required to pay the venue in full for your place, no matter the circumstances. Our venues enforce their cancellation policies strictly, and therefore we're unable to be flexible on refunds in the case of cancellations. We also may be unable to fill your space at such short notice. This is why adequate travel insurance is essential.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

Please read our health and safety information carefully.

While meditation, yoga and Buddhist psychology have been proven to be beneficial for mental health and wellbeing, our events are not presented as a treatment for serious mental health problems or addiction. Exploring the realm of the mind and emotions can be in itself an emotional experience and we always strive to create a safe, supportive environment for participants to embark on this exploration. However, for certain individuals experiencing psychological or emotional difficulties, this event may not be appropriate at this time. Read more.

Before booking, please read our full terms and conditions and contact us via [email protected] if you have any doubts.

As an LGBTQ-led Buddhist organisation, we strongly believe that no one should be discriminated against for any reason at all and subscribe to the ideals of non-harm and loving-kindness. You’re welcome no matter who you are and you’re free to express yourself authentically.
