Every experience comes with a basic feeling tone. Pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. We like it, we don't like it, or we don't care.
In Buddhist psychology this is vedana, and it is our prime motivator: everything we do is a move towards what feels pleasant or away from what feels unpleasant. We will go to great lengths to experience one type of feeling and not another.
Because feelings matter so much to us, the Buddha made them the second object of investigation in the four close applications of mindfulness.
In this session we will explore this essential vipashyana practice on feelings, and the relationship between these feeling tones and the mental afflictions of attachment and aversion. The teachings encourage us to become aware of feelings as they arise immediately after contact through the senses, see how quickly our reactions follow, and recognise how easily we take the pleasure or the irritation to be out there in the world rather than in the way we're experiencing it.
This is an opportunity to cultivate insight into the nature of feelings in a very practical way. Over time, as we become more aware of these basic feelings, we can learn to catch our projections and distortions, be less caught up in a particular feeling, emotion or story, and learn to respond to our feelings in a healthy, dynamic way.
The session includes a talk, a 24-minute guided meditation and time for discussion.
Saturday 14 November, 5 to 6.30pm UK time (10am in Colorado).

Ghatika Monthly is an in-person and virtual gathering held on the 2nd Saturday of every month for the local and global communities. Ghatika is the Sanskrit term for one 24-minute meditation session, which is the recommended length for beginning meditators. In each session, CCR expert teachers offer accessible guidance in foundational yet transformative contemplative practices. Each free session includes a theory and practice introduction by an expert teacher, a 24-minute guided meditation, and a Q&A discussion period.
While most of the CCR's expert teachers come from a Buddhist background, these sessions are designed to be secular, informative, and welcoming to beginning and advanced practitioners alike. You can find recordings of previous Ghatika Monthlys here.
The Center for Contemplative Research is a research, retreat and teaching center founded by Lama Alan and Eva Natanya, PhD, with its primary centre in Crestone, Colorado. Its founders are world experts on the convergence of science, philosophy, and religion, with decades of experience in contemplative practice, teaching, and research.
