Dreaming of Reality: Sleeping, Dreaming & Dying in Tibetan Buddhism

D4S2 - Causality Without a Mechanism

Lama Alan · 60 minutes · recorded January 1, 2019

Causality in Buddhism is phenomenological rather than mechanical: had this not happened, that would not have followed, and no bumping is required. Lama Alan Wallace points out that physics is in the same position, since nobody can picture how matter warps spacetime or how measuring one photon collapses the wave function of another light years away. In the practice we deliberately arouse a pleasant feeling, children playing, so that a subjective impulse can be watched arising and fading.
