Dwelling in the Heart of Reality

D1S3 - Mindfulness of Breathing, East and West

Lama Alan · Eva Natanya · 95 minutes · recorded January 1, 2020

Lama Alan Wallace separates hedonia, the pleasure we get from the world, from eudaimonia. He guides a mindfulness of breathing practice built on the Buddha's potter's wheel analogy, noting only whether each breath is long or short. The in breath arouses the attention and the out breath relaxes it. Eva Natanya then finds the parallel practice in the Hesychast fathers, and answers St Gregory Palamas's instruction to restrain the breath with St Gregory of Sinai: press the lips gently together, never impede the nasal breathing.
