D4S1 - Searching for the Mind, and Whether Shamatha Is Indispensable

Lama Alan · Eva Natanya · 122 minutes · recorded January 1, 2020

Lama Alan Wallace separates the Christian meanings of meditation and contemplation from the Buddhist ones, then leads a vipashyana practice from Padmasambhava: place the mind in the space in front of you and look for its shape, colour and size, and ask whether the mind that places and the mind placed are one or two. Eva Natanya agrees within a Buddhist context that no transformation is sustainable without shamatha, but not for the hesychast tradition, where dispassion is worked by the uncreated energies of the Trinity.
