Shamatha: Meditation for Balanced Living

S2 - Counting for Stability, and the Nostrils for Clarity

David Oromith · 73 minutes · recorded October 29, 2024

Mindfulness of breathing at the abdomen, with two tools added: focusing with the in-breath and relaxing with the out, then a brief count of one to seven. In a second practice we narrow attention to the sensations at the nostrils, for clarity. David separates mindfulness from introspection and describes the early stages towards shamatha, where recovering from distraction more quickly can feel like getting worse. Questions cover posture, when and how long to practise, and memories surfacing as practice deepens.
