Module 3: Foundations of Buddhist Theory II: The Roots of Suffering - The Three Poisons · The Buddha’s Path

Ignorance & Emptiness

David Oromith · 89 minutes · recorded June 4, 2024

The session opens with a brief guided meditation to settle the breath, before David turns to ignorance as the root of attachment and aversion, and to emptiness, the lack of inherent existence in people and things. He uses the cup, the car taken apart and the dream state to show how things exist only dependently, not as solid separate entities. Questions range widely: perception and the shared lamp, applying emptiness when someone is hurtful, and how to love someone who lacks inherent existence.
