Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo
Tibetan Buddhist Nun and Author
Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo is a bhikṣuṇī in the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. She is an author, teacher, and founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India. She is best known for having spent twelve years living in a remote cave in the Himalayas, three of those years in strict meditation retreat. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo was raised in London and became a Buddhist while still in her teens. At the age of twenty she traveled to India, becoming one of the first Westerners to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. After completing her 12-year cave retreat, deeply concerned with the plight of Buddhist nuns, she established Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Northern India, at the request of her Guru, His Eminence the Eighth Khamtrul Rinpoche. In 2008, His Holiness the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa, head of her Lineage, gave her the title of Jetsunma, meaning Venerable Master, for her spiritual achievements and contributions.
