An Introduction to the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas

David Oromith · 42 minutes · recorded July 10, 2024

David explains bodhichitta and what makes someone a bodhisattva, and places the 37 Practices among the four classic lojong texts. Most of the evening is the life of Gyalse Tokme Zangpo, born in 1295 in central Tibet and orphaned young, hailed a second Asanga at nineteen. Too quiet and humble to attract patrons, he refused to perform village rituals for offerings and wrote these verses instead. The retreat on the text is in the library as a one week course.

In this session, David Oromith introduces the themes of our upcoming 6-day retreat (being held in-person and online) in August 2024. This session provides an introduction to the profoundly transformative and highly revered 14th-century Tibetan Buddhist text, The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas by Gyalse Tokme Zangpo. This text is a classic lojong (mind-training) treatise which advises how to transform our life by following the bodhisattva path. Lojong is about transforming all of life’s daily experiences into the path, rather than seeing them as obstacles to our spiritual practice.
