Preventing Burnout and Cultivating Emotional Balance
Eve Ekman · 109 minutes · recorded June 16, 2022
Burnout in three layers, emotional exhaustion, a lost sense that the work matters, and cynicism, and how to keep an open heart without being pulled under by it. Eve Ekman reports her study of a hundred medical residents tracking their emotions twice a day, who turned out to be reporting enjoyment in half the moments they logged. Emotion granularity, pro-social emotions and fierce compassion follow as the remedies. The morning opens with a brief embodied practice adapted from Tsoknyi Rinpoche.
An online meeting with Dr. Eve Ekman, who explores the topic of burnout prevention and the foundations of emotional balance. This session is both a valuable introduction to the science of emotions for those new to it and an important reminder to experienced practitioners. Dr. Eve Ekman is a contemplative social scientist and teacher in the field of emotional awareness and burnout prevention. She is the co-lead instructor for CEB, an evidence-based emotional awareness training created by Dr. Paul Ekman and Buddhist scholar & teacher Lama Alan Wallace. The CEB training invites participants to investigate their driving motivations, as well as the roots of their destructive emotional episodes through tools of meditative practice and in-depth analysis of emotional events.
