Transforming Your Mind: Buddhist Mind Training (NEWCASTLE)

About this Event

During this day retreat, held at Peace of Mind Meditation’s ‘Studio by the Sea’ we will explore Buddhist Mind Training techniques (lojong) that help us transform emotional pain, anxiety, and stress into mental well-being in ways that benefit us and the people around us. These practices are accessible to anyone seeking inner transformation—whether Buddhist or not.

"Mind training is especially well suited for an active life. It does not require that we withdraw in seclusion, but that we re-examine all of our relationships - to family, friends, enemies, and strangers - and gradually transform our responses to whatever life throws our way. It is a Mahayana practice that aspires to attain full awakening through compassion and loving-kindness for all creatures."
- B. Alan Wallace

What We’ll Explore

  • Explore the foundational techniques of Buddhist Mind Training (lojong).
  • Discover how to turn everyday difficulties into opportunities for personal growth.
  • Learn how challenging emotions can be transformed into deep inner transformation.
  • Experience stillness and calm through easy-to-follow guided meditations.
  • Share and learn with like-minded friends in group discussions.

Lunch

A nourishing plant-based lunch is included, as well as tea and coffee during our breaks.

David has requested that we eat a plant-based lunch. This is an expression of avoiding harm and cultivating compassion – taking into account the welfare of our planet and fellow inhabitants.

Booking & Donations

There are limited places available for this day retreat. Please book in advance using the form at the bottom of this page.

We are embracing a sliding scale policy for this event, guided by the Buddhist principle of generosity and inclusivity. There are suggested donations to help cover the cost of putting on this event, including lunch, teas & coffees, and the travel and accommodation cost for the teacher and volunteers. Choosing the higher option includes a donation to support our activities for the benefit of all.

We firmly believe, however, that financial constraints should never be a barrier to participation. If the suggested amount is beyond your means, please choose the lower option or contribute what you can — every offering helps make this event possible for the collective good. Without your honesty and generosity, we wouldn’t be able to make this event happen!

Parking & Getting Here

There is free car parking next to the Ship’s Cat, a minute away from the studio.

The studio is about 10-15 minutes walk from both North Shields and Tynemouth metro station.

The studio is on Google Maps under Peace of Mind Meditation. (Here is a link)

The Studio is tucked away off the main street (Union Road) behind the Old Low Light lighthouse building. The studio is located on the first floor, up the blue metal staircase and first door (it is labelled). However, if you cannot manage the stairs, please let us know in advance so we can arrange access to the manual lift.

About the Teacher

David Oromith is the co-founder of Samadhi. He is a Buddhist contemplative and meditation guide with a background in mental health services. Having practised meditation since the age of 18, his journey into Buddhism began through personal struggles with depression and anxiety, leading him to the Buddha’s teachings.

David has studied under various teachers, with Dr. B. Alan Wallace as his primary teacher, and is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism among other traditions, recognising the value and benefit of multiple points-of-view. He focuses on meditation training and core, practical Buddhist principles in his teachings. He is the author of the book A Practical Guide to Mindful Living and leads several retreats across the UK every year, as well as teaching online and in person across South Wales.

David’s engaging style is clear, practical, and relatable, hoping to make ancient practices applicable to modern life. He works towards the establishment of the Samadhi Eco Retreat Centre as a community for inner development.

Reviews

david

David is an experienced Buddhist contemplative and meditation guide who has studied and taught internationally for several years. He is the Co-Founder of Samadhi and a qualified mindfulness teacher, Mental Health First Aider, and an active member of the Association for Spiritual Integrity. His teaching style is clear and practical, and his warm and humorous approach makes him a popular mindfulness teacher. In his own practise and teachings, David focusses on the core themes of Early Buddhism and emphasises the practices of Shamatha (meditative quiescence), and its union with Vipassana on the Four Applications of Mindfulness and the Four Immeasurables – which presents a direct path leading to the realisation of our deepest nature and the potentials of consciousness, and closely follows how the Buddha himself attained enlightenment. He considers himself to be the fortunate student of many teachers, including his root lama, Lama Alan Wallace.
