Practising with Joy: Lightness and Humour on the Buddhist Path

Evening Talk & Meditation

We so often think of spiritual practice in terms of what we need to overcome: our difficulties, our afflictions, our suffering. But what if joy itself were one of the most important tools on the path?

In this session, we explore why figures like the Dalai Lama radiate such infectious happiness, the often-overlooked role of joy, play, and lightness in Buddhist practice, and how humour can itself be a profound antidote to our challenges.

Come and discover how to bring more joy into your practice and your life.

About the Teacher

David Oromith is the co-founder of Samadhi. He is a Buddhist contemplative and meditation guide with a background in mental health services. Having practised meditation since the age of 18, his journey into Buddhism began through personal struggles with depression and anxiety, which eventually led him to the Buddha’s teachings.

David has studied under various teachers, with Dr. B. Alan Wallace as his primary teacher, and is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism among other traditions, recognising the value and benefit of multiple points-of-view. He focuses on meditation training and core, practical Buddhist principles in his teachings. He is the author of the books Calm Mind, Open Heart and A Practical Guide to Mindful Living and leads several retreats across the UK every year, as well as teaching online and in person across South Wales.

David’s engaging style is clear, practical, and relatable, hoping to make ancient practices applicable to modern life. He works towards the establishment of the Samadhi Eco Retreat Centre as a community for inner development.

david

David is an experienced Buddhist contemplative and meditation guide who has studied and taught internationally for several years. He is the Co-Founder of Samadhi and a qualified mindfulness teacher, Mental Health First Aider, and an active member of the Association for Spiritual Integrity. His teaching style is clear and practical, and his warm and humorous approach makes him a popular mindfulness teacher. In his own practise and teachings, David focusses on the core themes of Early Buddhism and emphasises the practices of Shamatha (meditative quiescence), and its union with Vipassana on the Four Applications of Mindfulness and the Four Immeasurables – which presents a direct path leading to the realisation of our deepest nature and the potentials of consciousness, and closely follows how the Buddha himself attained enlightenment. He considers himself to be the fortunate student of many teachers, including his root lama, Lama Alan Wallace.
