During this day retreat we will explore in theory and practice a range of methods for developing meditative quiescence, or shamatha.
The achievement of shamatha is widely regarded in the Buddhist tradition as an indispensable foundation for the cultivation of contemplative insight (vipashyana), and this course is designed to provide a theoretical understanding and an experiential basis to enable you to proceed effectively toward this extraordinary state of mental and physical balance.
The purpose of shamatha meditation is to stabilise the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation. Shamatha meditation allows us to experience our mind as it is, calming our thoughts and emotions, and experiencing a tranquility of mind unlike any other. With shamatha as our foundation, we can unlock the true power of our mind.
“Shamatha is, very simply put, about developing exceptional mental health and wellbeing and experiencing the genuine wellbeing that comes from having a wonderfully balanced and healthy mind.” – B. Alan Wallace
About the day
The day will consist of three sessions and two breaks. The sessions are a mixture of dharma talks, guided meditations, and meditation tips. The longer afternoon break is an opportunity to enjoy the pool, relax, and get acquainted with new friends over a delicious light lunch (vegan). We conclude the day with discussion and Q&A.
There is no need to wear anything special (just be comfortable!) or bring anything in particular, though you are welcome to bring your own cushion/mat if you wish.
✔ 3 sessions with meditation teacher, Dassetu
✔ A variety of guided shamatha meditations – which are easy to follow and can be practiced at home.
✔ Dharma talks – exploring the theory and practice behind shamatha and its role on the Buddhist path.
✔ A chance to discuss with others and ask questions
✔ A nutritious and light vegan lunch to complement the day
✔ Use of the pool during the afternoon lunch break (bring swimwear!)
✔ Refreshments provided throughout the day
