Joyful Heart Day Retreat: Cultivating the Heart and Mind

At a time when we are encouraged to maintain physical distance, it’s more important than ever to enhance our emotional connection with others. Connecting with others in this way has numerous other benefits – it makes us feel joyful, calm, and loving, with a greater appreciation for the kindness of others and better relationships.

Sometimes, we can have a sense that we are an autonomous self, completely separate from others, with our own needs and wishes being of most importance. But, we are all interdependently connected in countless ways and this pandemic has made this more and more apparent. Love is our way of connecting with other sentient beings. The benefits of love are very powerful and special – as soon as we generate an attitude of loving-kindness, we start feeling more calm and peaceful, and naturally share this feeling with other beings. Our whole field of perception is changed into something beautiful.

During this day retreat, we will be cultivating our heart and minds through the practices of The Four Immeasurables. These practices open the heart and bring joy into our lives, countering any imbalances in the way we view ourself, and deepening our relationships with others.

About the day

The day will consist of four sessions and three breaks. The sessions are a mixture of dharma talks, guided meditations, and meditation tips. The longer afternoon break is an opportunity to enjoy the pool, relax, and get acquainted with new friends over a delicious light lunch (vegan). We conclude the day with discussion and Q&A.

There is no need to wear anything special (just be comfortable!) or bring anything in particular, though you are welcome to bring your own cushion/mat if you wish.

What’s Included?

4 sessions with meditation teacher, Dassetu
Guided meditations on loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity – which are easy to follow and can be practiced at home.
Dharma talks – exploring Buddhist psychology and the teachings of the Four Immeasurables.
A chance to discuss with others and ask questions
A nutritious and light vegan lunch to complement the day
Use of the pool during the afternoon lunch break (bring swimwear!)
Refreshments provided throughout the day

His teaching style is clear and practical, and his warm and humorous approach makes him a popular mindfulness teacher. In his own practise and teachings, David focusses on the core themes of Early Buddhism and emphasises the practices of Shamatha (meditative quiescence), and its union with Vipassana on the Four Applications of Mindfulness and the Four Immeasurables – which presents a direct path leading to the realisation of our deepest nature and the potentials of consciousness, and closely follows how the Buddha himself attained enlightenment. He considers himself to be the fortunate student of many teachers, including his root lama, Lama Alan Wallace.
